Qualifying round 1
Q1 was delayed after raindrops fell on the track and conditions had to be reviewed by FIA commissioners. With the green signal from them, all drivers except the Williams guys with the wet tires went out. It turned out that Williams was the one who got the conditions right by betting on the intermediate tires. As they watched the Williams go faster than anyone on the grid, the rest of the cars pitted and switched to the intermediate tires. Chats from multiple teams expressed that the rain was going to get worse. Lando Norris finished the session in P1 and appeared to be in tune with the track conditions and the car’s setup.
Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo Racing), Yuki Tsunoda (Scuderia AlphaTauri), Mick Schumacher (Haas F1 Team), Kimi Räikkönen (Alfa Romeo Racing) and Nikita Mazepin (Haas F1 Team) retired at the end of Q1.
