Max Verstappen was fastest ahead of teammate Sergio Perez in the final free practice session in the rain Spa Francorchamps Saturday morning.
Track conditions were difficult for the whole session and the rain before the session definitely made it mediocre tire weather, while another shower in the middle of the session meant the track was never really dry enough to switch to dry tires.
the Red Bull Racing The duo of Verstappen and Pérez seemed to get the most out of the conditions by finishing first and second despite a 0.947 second run and if they can repeat that in qualifying later on Saturday the team will be delighted.
Lewis Hamilton third fastest for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team, but behind him it was a more confusing order as the drivers were trying to get a good lap around the longest lap on the calendar in very difficult conditions.
Lando Norris ended fourth fastest for the McLaren F1 team, with the Briton having the honor of being the only driver to do a lap on dry tires in the last two minutes of the session. After a tricky out lap, however, he immediately returned to the pit lane.
Hungarian Grand Prix Race winner Esteban Ocon was one of the last to achieve a representative lap time, but the Alpine F1 team Driver was fifth fastest, just ahead of the rainy weather specialist Lance walk of Aston Martin Cognizant Formula 1 team.
Pierre Gasly had a jaunt at Courbe Paul Frère, but that Scuderia AlphaTauri Honda The driver’s best lap was seventh, just ahead of Aston Martins Sebastian Vettel, while George Russell was an impressive ninth for Williams races, just before Alpines Fernando Alonso.
Valtteri Bottas, who had to apply for a starting penalty of five places in qualifying due to the collision in the first corner of the Hungarian Grand Prix, was outside the top ten in the second Mercedes on Saturday morning, the Finn ended up just ahead of the second Williams from Nicholas Latifi.
Daniel Ricciardo was thirteenth in the second McLaren ahead of the leader Scuderia Ferrari from Carlos Sainz Jr., while the Spaniard’s teammate Charles LeclercHe, who had a new chassis for the rest of the weekend after his crash on Friday, finished sixteenth, just behind Uralkali Haas F1 Team‘S Mick Schumacher.
Yuki Tsunoda was seventeenth for AlphaTauri while it was a disappointing session for Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN, with Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Raikkonen eighteenth and twentieth on both sides of the Haas of Nikita Mazepin.
Raikkonen’s session was limited to just three laps as he suffered a suspected brake failure. He was able to return to the pits, but the subsequent repair was not completed in time for the run to resume.
Track conditions caused a number of riders to stray off the track, particularly at the end of the Kemmel Straight, with riders like Hamilton, Bottas and Vettel all driving through the run-off zone.
More rain is forecast for the remainder of the weekend, but time will tell if it will play a role in qualifying. If so, pole position can go many different paths!
