Former Haas F1 driver Grosjean would answer the phone when the Formula 1 team calls this season

Former Haas F1 driver Grosjean would answer the phone when the Formula 1 team calls this season

  • Former Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean drove in Formula 1 from 2009 to 2020.
  • After losing his drive at Haas F1 last season, Grosjean will drive in IndyCar for car owner Dale Coyne in 2021.
  • Grosjean says he would answer the phone if a Formula 1 team was looking for an emergency replacement driver this season.

Former Haas F1 team driver Romain Grosjean believes he would be high on the list should a chance in Formula 1 arise this season.

Grosjean is in the US this week, where his burned hands have healed enough to test the Indy car he will be driving for Dale Coyne Racing with Rick Ware Racing on street circuits and street tracks in 2021. Grosjean believes, however, that the COVID-19 situation, in which drivers will have to suspend races if they contract the virus, presents a clear potential opportunity for a one-off return to Formula 1 if necessary.

“Of all the drivers who currently do not have a regular seat, Kevin (Magnussen), Alex Albon and I are the most experienced,” said Grosjean. “We all know how a modern F1 car behaves. So yeah, I would expect one of us to get a call.”

At the same time, 34-year-old Grosjean, who made 179 F1 starts, says his full-time Formula 1 career is almost certainly over. He told Swiss broadcaster SRF that it was therefore the perfect time to get in touch with some of his former F1 rivals to make friends.

“There are only 20 drivers in Formula 1 and everyone wants a contract with the best team,” said Grosjean. “In a situation like this, it is difficult to be friends with anyone. But after your career ends, your relationship with the drivers can change. You share the same hobbies, have traveled and lived a lot together, so you will definitely become friends.” .

“But when you compete with someone you want to take their place. I have an excellent relationship with Sebastian Vettel – I respect him deeply – but we can only become friends now. When he was at Ferrari, what did I want? His if I did got a call from Ferrari, what would I do if I was friends with Sebastian? I’d call him back and warn him to be careful.

“It’s difficult in a situation like this. When you’re in Formula One, you respect your opponent, but friendship can only begin after your career has ended.”

Romain Grosjean will be racing in IndyCar this year, but it sounds like his heart is still in Formula 1. What do you predict for Grosjean’s IndyCar deployment in 2021? Can he win a race in IndyCar? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
