Fittipaldi will continue as the Haas F1 test and reserve driver in 2022

Fittipaldi will continue as the Haas F1 test and reserve driver in 2022

Fittipaldi, 25, first connected with Haas in late 2018 and made two F1 appearances in late 2020 when he represented Romain Grosjean after his accident in Bahrain. He achieved a best result of 17 at the Sakhir Grand Prix.

Fittipaldi took part in most of the Grands Prix until 2021 as Haas’ reserve driver and supported Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. The team announced on Thursday that he will continue the role next year.

“I am of course very happy and excited about the opportunity to continue my collaboration with Haas,” said Fittipaldi, grandson of two-time F1 World Champion Emerson Fittipaldi.

“I’ve been on the team for a few seasons now and they feel very like family. I’ve learned a lot in my time and I hope that with the introduction of the new generation of Formula 1 cars in 2022, I can continue to contribute.

“It will be exciting to see what’s coming with the new package, and of course I’m just as excited as the rest of the team to see what the VF-22 will do on the track.”

Haas F1 boss Gunther Steiner called it a “very easy decision” to keep Fittipaldi in the role for the next season.

“Pietro knows the inner workings of our team very well because he’s been with us for so long,” said Steiner.

“He showed us last year that he is ready to accelerate and drive when necessary, and his presence on the team this year has obviously also brought continuity.

“We look forward to continuing our relationship and look forward to having him back on board in 2022.”

In addition to his engagements with Haas, Fittipaldi drove three starts in the IndyCar for Dale Coyne Racing this year, including the Indianapolis 500, where he was the fastest rookie qualifier.

Fittipaldi also made his debut in the European Le Mans Series with G-Drive Racing this year and made a one-off appearance in Brazilian stock cars.
