Enzo Fittipaldi broke his right heel after a terrifying initial collision with Theo Pourchaire at the Formula 2 feature race in Saudi Arabia.
Pourchaire stalled from third on the grid and was hit at high speed by the unseen Fittipaldi.
Both were transported to a nearby hospital and remained conscious.
Fittipaldi’s older brother, Haas F1 reserve Pietro, confirmed in an update that Enzo is “awake / awake and resting in the hospital.
“He has a fracture in his right heel, but luckily it’s going a lot better than we all expected.
“Thanks to the FIA, the team and all the medical staff here in Saudi Arabia.”
Pourchaire was recovered from a serious injury in the impact but is not yet sure whether he will make it to the finals in Abu Dhabi this weekend.
“I just wanted to tell you that I am doing fine around the world,” Pourchaire wrote on his social media pages.
“At the moment I don’t know if it’s the end of the season for me. But the most important thing is not that, that was a really big one and Enzo is injured. I wish him the best possible recovery! “
The shortened race was won by title leader Oscar Piastri.
This means that Piastri is as good as certain of this year’s championship, having a 52.5 point lead over his teammate Robert Shwartzman, with a maximum of 65 to win.
Alfa Romeo-tied Guanyu Zhou remains in the mathematical competition technically, but is now 64.5 behind Piastri.
