According to team boss Mattia Binotto, Ferrari has implemented a “significantly different” engine solution for the upcoming 2022 F1 season.

Ferrari showed an upward trend in 2021 after a dismal performance in 2020. The team finished P3 in the Constructors’ World Championship, while drivers Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc finished P5 and P7 respectively.

As we enter a new era of regulatory change, Mattia Binotto revealed that Ferrari’s new car will not only look different because of the engine, but will also drive differently.

In an interview with The Race, Binotto said:

“Although the hybrid system is pretty much the same as the one we used in late 2021.”

The difference that Binotto alludes to concerns the use of a new fuel called E10, which will be mandated by the FIA from 2022.

This was mainly introduced to help F1 reduce its global carbon footprint as the sport is set to become more sustainable in the future. E10 contains 10% ethanol and can cause Formula 1 cars to lose at least 20 horsepower. It was that impact that led Ferrari to make these changes, claims Binotto:

“That has a major impact on the combustion in the engine. We have therefore changed a few things in this design. “

Binotto was “encouraged” by Ferrari’s third place finish in 2021 but will have his job for him if they want to improve on that result this year.

Ferrari confirms Mick Schumacher and Antonio Giovinazzi as F1 2022 reserve drivers

Ferrari will use the services of Mick Schumacher and Antonio Giovinazzi as substitute drivers for Scuderia, the team confirmed.

Mick Schumacher already has a full-time contract with the Haas F1 team, which uses a Ferrari engine. Antonio Giovinazzi was with Alfa Romeo until the 2021 season and is expected to drive in Formula E next season.

Schumacher is entitled to replace either Carlos Sainz or Charles Leclerc for the 11th race should this be necessary. Giovinazzi is scheduled for the remaining 13 races on the 24th race calendar.

Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto said:

“Whenever he (Antonio Giovinazzi) is on the track, he will be our reserve driver. He will also be available to our customer teams, both Haas and Alfa Romeo. Mick Schumacher will be his replacement for the remaining 11 races. “Driver for Ferrari.”

Mick Schumacher’s Team Haas has now confirmed the Brazilian Pietro Fittipaldi as a substitute driver. Fittipaldi is the grandson of two-time world champion Emerson Fittipaldi.
