As rounds in Abu Dhabi drew towards the controversial, absurd end of the Formula 1 season, the fan voted ‘Driver of the Day’ was already out of the running. Kimi Raikkonen’s 349th and final Grand Prix start ended prematurely at Yas Marina after a lug nut problem forced him to pit less than halfway through the race. It left him to fulfill his obligations as a media writer – reluctantly at the direction of the FIA - before slipping away for a low-key end to his F1 career.
Over 20 years have passed since Raikkonen made his F1 debut with Sauber as a Formula Renault child, which many wrote off as not ready for racing at the highest level. He won 21 races in more than 15 years and is still Ferrari’s youngest world champion in 2007, establishing himself as one of the greats of his generation.
