After the COVID-19 pandemic forced a four-month delay into the start of the 2020 season, F1 drivers had to deal with outside activities.
Most chose to keep getting involved in motorsport by engaging in esports. Charles Leclerc, Lando Norris, George Russell and Alexander Albon all took part in virtual racing events.
But the then Ferrari driver Vettel remained inconspicuous due to the blockage and has now announced that he has completed an internship in organic farming to learn more about agriculture.
Vettel has already spoken about his interest in nature and agriculture and was presented this week as an ambassador for the organic bees and apples initiative, which aims to protect habitats for insects.
“Having more time than planned, I thought about what I could do and what interests me,” explained Aston Martin driver Vettel, revealing that he was moving to learn more practical farming skills.
“That interests me. At some point you realize that not all vegetables are the same, not every apple has the same nutrients, and then you ask why.
“Then you realize very quickly where the apple comes from and how it is grown – and so the doors opened for me.
“The theory interests me and I read a lot about it. But learning more from the practical side and talking to the people who deal with it every day was very interesting.”

Vettel explained how he wanted to plant a meadow in the shape of a love heart for his young daughters in their home in Switzerland.
“Since I did not want to be satisfied with a small heart, I marked the heart a little bigger,” said Vettel.
“The girls were there at the beginning, but then I was alone with the spade and that was very exhausting.
“A little showed up last year, but I’m looking forward to seeing more sprouts this year.”

Vettel is not the only F1 world champion who has shown interest in organic farming and cultivation. 1979 World Champion Jody Scheckter has owned a biodynamic farm in the UK for almost 15 years.
But Vettel turned down the idea that he would have a second career in agriculture, saying it was “still a long way off, of course.”
