Put phasers on drooling! Many of us dream of becoming racing drivers at a young age. Typically two things stand in the way of this dream; Skill and money. Obviously some people have enough money to pretend to be racing drivers while most of us don’t have the skills or the money. However, this fully functional replica of the Ferrari 312 F1 costs only $ 9,000. Owning this Ferrari isn’t going to give you new skills, but it can certainly make you want to be the part.

This F1 Ferrari 312 replica is too cool

While this little Ferrari racer might look a bit intimidating at first, it was only built for a good time. Sure, it’s modeled after a legendary F1 racing car valued at bazillion dollars, but in reality it’s just not that serious.

According to Silodrome, this replica F1 racer was built on a tubular steel chassis topped by a custom-made body in Ferrari livery. It features contemporary drum brakes all around and * Chef’s Kiss * gold-painted steelie wheels. To underline the foundation of this Ferrari replica, it has a four-link coilover rear suspension with double wishbone coilover front suspension.

Now for the fun part. This replica gets its power from a 110 hp, air-cooled Corvair boxer six-cylinder. The snappy little engine is an electronic ignition from Protronics, twin carburetors and short carbon fiber mufflers. If all of that wasn’t exciting enough, it’s rear-wheel drive with four-speed gearbox too. * drool *

Where does this happy “Ferrari” come from?

The story is that this car started out as the show car in Indianapolis in the 1970s. The original owner of the car, Jim Shillington, was a member of the Indianapolis 500 Shrine Club. He and every other member of the club had cars like that.

After Jim’s death in the 1990s, the car eventually ended up in the hands of Mike Sassaman. Sassaman was the brain behind converting this little showcase car into the replica of the Ferrari F1 car it is today.

His favorite car was the 1967 Ferrari 312, which was driven by Lorenzo Bandin. He realized that with a little elbow grease, he could have a faithful replica of his favorite car without spending tens of millions on the original. He went into bending, cutting, and welding body shells until he got something pretty close to the 312.

Although the replica is quite impressive, the Corvair boxer six-cylinder is a long way from the Ferrari V12 of the 312. Since he wasn’t going to get a 1967 Ferrari V12, he did the next best thing by making an engine cover that made his six-cylinder look like the part.

Can you drive this vintage replica of the Ferrari 312 on the road?

Now that Sassaman has decided to sell his Ferrari 312 creation, he’s inundated with one more question than any other; “Is it street legal? Unfortunately it isn’t. The radical Ferrari F1 replica is only banned on closed racetracks and tracks.

While you can’t legally drive around the neighborhood on it, it’s still the most fun way to spend $ 9,000 we’ve seen all week. Damn it, it would even be decent to have it on display. But that would be a waste. Buy this and ride it hard. View more photos of the replica for sale here.
