The Ferrari F1 team is currently “in a hole,” says the CEO

Ferrari F1 team is stuck "in a hole" right now, says CEO

The Italian team put in another disappointing performance at the Tuscan Grand Prix, when Charles Leclerc dropped from early third place to eighth place and Sebastian Vettel landed in tenth place.

Several executives from the team performed at the 1000th Grand Prix – including chairman John Elkann and Camilleri.

And Camilleri, reflecting on the difficult period of the campaign, bruising at Spa and Monza over the weekend, said he was not hiding from the problems the team was facing.

“Look, we’re in a hole now and we know we’re in a hole,” he said. “It’s a confluence of factors, but everything I say will come out as excuses. And we don’t like excuses.

“So it’s about focusing on the problems we have and working hard to get back to what we believe to be our rightful place.”

Ferrari knows the chassis and engine freeze rules for this year limit the scope for progress

It is to be hoped, however, that development work on his engine can allow him to reduce the deficit he has faced this season before completely new rules are introduced for 2022.

When asked if there is hope of getting much better before the 2022 changes, Camilleri said, “I mean, realistically, it will be difficult.

“In Formula 1 we always fight against time, both on the track and in development, and there is no miracle cure. So we take our time. I hope that with a little more flexibility in the regs next year we can at least be able to . ” Take it up from where we are.

“Mercedes, hats off to you, you did an incredible job and we will see with the new regs in 2022 if there is a reset. That is our hope.”

Ferrari celebrated its 1000th birthday with a special event in Florence on Saturday evening – and Camilleri still sees a bright future for the outfit.

“Look, I think Ferrari and Formula One are kind of connected at the hip,” he said. “How can you imagine Formula 1 without Ferrari? Or vice versa?

“We’ve always been there and we’re the only team … Others come and go. And yes, history also creates pressure. So we’re looking forward to the next thousand.”
