Schumacher's progress in the rookie F1 season pleased Ferrari boss

Ferrari junior Schumacher completed the Formula 1 World Championship with Haas this year after winning the Formula 2 Championship in 2020 and had a solid start to his first season despite driving underdeveloped machines.

Apart from crashes in qualifying in Monaco, France and Hungary, the German was a safe couple for the American team and easily surpassed his rookie team-mate Nikita Mazepin in the first eleven races of the year.

And Schumacher’s attitude and performance have not gone unnoticed by Ferrari boss Binotto, who believes that his protégé is “doing well” given the circumstances.

“Mick in his very first year in Formula 1 for Haas, I think we said at the beginning of the season that the goal for him wasn’t pressure at first, but to make sure he learned,” said Binotto.

“So 2021 has to be an important year for him in terms of learning, and I think if we look at that goal, he’s doing well. I think Mick has been doing well since the start of the season, he’s learning, he’s making progress. A few mistakes, of course, but that’s part of the learning process.

“Overall, we can be satisfied with the results so far. It is important to him to develop and develop further in the second half. But I am confident that he can do that. “

However, Binotto is less impressed with the performances of the other Ferrari Academy’s drivers in F2. Robert Shwartzman is currently the leading Ferrari junior and is in third place in the drivers’ standings, 17 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, while Marcus Armstrong is in 14th place.

“When I look at the young drivers at the Ferrari Driver Academy, I have no doubt that the results are not as good as last year,” he said.

“Last year we had great results, especially in Formula 2, which is not the case with us [now]. So overall we can’t be as happy as we were. “
