Binotto rejects the ramifications of the key advantage Ferrari gained with its poor F1 outing in 2020

The aim is not to beat McLaren: Binotto lists Ferrari's "main target" this F1 season

Ferrari was arguably the best improved team of the season. The Italian team had a dismal 2020 season when they finished sixth in the Constructors’ Championship. They are currently joint P3 with McLaren in the championship in 2021. The improvements the team made late last year have paid off this season.

Unfortunately, Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto believes the improvements in the wind tunnel weren’t that significant. He revealed that after a week of development, the team gained less than 0.1 seconds per lap.

Additional wind tunnel time no “game changer” – Mattia Binotto

As Motorsport reports, the team has more time in the wind tunnel thanks to the placement last season. Ferrari has a total of 40 wind tunnel runs compared to Mercedes’ 36.

Even so, Binotto believes that the development in the wind tunnel will not be as significant during the season.

“Of course we have a little more time in the wind tunnel for the position we finished last year,” said Binotto.

“The extra time we have corresponds to the so-called wind tunnel sessions throughout the season, so it’s an extra session. And usually an extra training session is a development week, and normally a development week lasts less than 0.1 seconds per lap. “

While Binotto acknowledges the extra time helped them, he doesn’t think it’s as helpful as people think it is.

“So yeah, it’s definitely an advantage, but it’s less than 0.1 seconds per lap. It’s still important, I’m still happy to have it, not because of last year’s result, but because at least it’s something we have in 2021.

“But we don’t think that’s a game changer. It’s not, ”he added.

“If we look at the lap time, the pure car performance, let’s say the qualification last year – because we all have the top performance … [seconds].

“So 0.7 is still a gap, it shouldn’t be neglected, we are fully aware of it, but I still think that we have halved the gap to the best,” said Binotto.
