Jean Alesi crashes Niki Lauda's legendary Ferrari F1 car in Monaco

An F1 exhibition race was held on the Monte Carlo circuit earlier this weekend. This race featured a variety of classic F1 cars that will race on the road. It’s worth noting that the historic Monaco Grand Prix includes separate races for each generation. Unfortunately there was a little mishap in one of the races. As it turned out, ex-F1 driver Jean Alesi fell while driving the Ferrari that the late Niki Lauda had been driving.

The Frenchman crashed into the wall while running at the front. The incident occurred a few laps before the end of the race. At the time, Alesi was driving the Ferrari 312B3 while battling three-time Le Mans winner Marco Werner in the Lotus 77.

The bad news was that it all ended in tears with three laps to go when the duo collided. Apparently the German driver cut off the rear of Alesis Ferrari on the start-finish straight. As a result, the Frenchman’s sole target was straight into the pit wall. To be honest, it was a bit of a shame because the ex-F1 driver had an almost flawless race up to that point.

The Ferrari 312B3 put Niki Lauda in 4th place in 1974

It is worth noting that Niki Lauda drove the Ferrari 312B3 from 1974 to mid-1975. During this time, the Austrian legend secured two victories in 1974. However, in 1975 it soon switched to the 312T, but that’s another story.

Alesi’s incident wasn’t the only one that returned to the classic Monaco race. The red flag ended the race prematurely after a Surtees car crashed somewhere between Casino Square and Mirabeau.

It’s also worth noting that Werner issued a penalty for his role in the Alesi incident. So he lost the race win and fell back to third place. Meanwhile, Michael Lyons inherited the win in his McLaren M26, while Julien Andlauer finished second in his March 761.
