•    Arthur Leclerc and Sebastian Montoya among high-calibre line-up

•    Compact calendar and FIA Super Licence points prove major draws for serious talent

The Formula Regional Asian Championship Certified by FIA (FRAC) has announced an impressive 28-car entry for the opening round of the 2022 season at Abu Dhabi’s FIA Grade I Yas Marina Circuit. The entry includes drivers representing 15 nations competing with eight of the world’s premier junior single seater teams, among them four F1 junior academy talents.

Reigning champions Abu Dhabi Racing by Prema, which won the title last year with newly-signed Alfa Romeo F1 driver Zhou Guanyu, enters five cars for the UAE-based season. Red Bull Junior Team member, 16-year-old American Jak Crawford, makes his FRAC debut with the team following his debut season in the FIA Formula 3 Championship last year. Joining him is Mercedes Junior Team Estonian Paul Aron, 17, and three members of the pioneering Emirati racing family of Al Qubaisi; father Khaled and daughters Hamda and Amna.

A four-car entry for the season start from two-time team champions Hitech Grand Prix is headed by Red Bull Junior Team driver and 2021 Formula Regional European Championship (FREC) Rookie champion Isack Hadjar. The 17-year-old French-Algerian is joined on the team by Italian teenagers Gabriele Minì and Leonardo Fornaroli, and former Sauber Junior Team driver Joshua Dufek of Switzerland.

Hong Kong SAR-based BlackArts Racing, which took a clean-sweep of Driver, Team and Masters titles in 2020, returns with 20-year-old Luxembourger Brice Morabito, back on track after contesting the Austrian F3 Cup in 2020. Israeli driver Ido Cohen, 20, makes his debut with the team and the championship having contested his first FIA F3 Championship season in 2021. Joining them is experienced Asian single seater expert and reigning FRAC Masters Champion Thomas Luedi.

Mumbai Falcons India Racing, which made its series debut last season, is back with a trio of strong title contenders. Ferrari Driver Academy member Dino Beganovic took four podiums in the nine FRAC races he contested last year, and returns for a full season tilt at the title this time around.

Joining him are fellow Academy driver Arthur Leclerc, the 21-year-old younger brother of current Scuderia Ferrari F1 ace Charles, and Sebastian Montoya, 16-year-old son of seven-time F1 Grand Prix winner and two-time Indy 500 champion Juan Pablo.

While the Monégasque Ferrari protégé will contest the full FRAC season, Montoya will compete in the opening three rounds after which his seat is expected to be taken by another Ferrari Driver Academy youngster, reigning Italian and ADAC F4 champion Ollie Bearman.

The season sees the return of Turkish talent Cem Bolukbasi, this time with Australian-based Evans GP. Bolukbasi finished his debut FRAC season ninth in the standings, and will join the FIA F2 Championship later this season with Charouz Racing System.

Nicola Marinangeli is another returning driver, and the 18-year-old Italian is joined by series newcomer Frederick Lubin, who made his single seater racing debut in 2020.

The two-car Evans GP Academy entry, meanwhile, features Hungarian Levente Révész, making his single seater debut, and American David Morales, racing in the Middle East for the first time in his career.

Pinnacle Motorsport, with whom Pierre-Louis Chovet finished runner-up in 2021, returns with a four-car entry headed by exciting 17-year-old Dutchman Dilano van’t Hoff. Hoff dominated the 2021 Spanish F4 championship to win the title by a substantial points margin, and just missed out on the F4 UAE title by a single point last season.

Spaniard Pepe Marti made his single seater debut in 2021 with the F4 UAE and Spanish championships, finishing an impressive third in the latter. Ayato Iwasaki takes the step from Asian karting into single seaters with FRAC this season, while Salih Yoluç takes a break from his hugely successful sportscar career to contest the championship.

French team 3Y by R-ace GP joins the championship for the first time in 2022, and boasts a strong driver line-up with Monaco-based Danish-German Oliver Goethe, Frenchman Hadrien David, who became the youngest-ever F4 champion in 2019 when he took the French title, Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto, and Spaniard Lorenzo Fluxá, who returns for a second season.

The opening round of the 2022 FRAC season gets underway at the 5.28km Yas Marina Circuit with two full days of testing on January 19 and 20, before a free practice and two qualifying sessions on Friday, January 21. Race 1 begins at 11:00 local time on Saturday. Race 2 starts at 10:50 on Sunday, followed by Race 3 at 14:35 (all times GMT+4). All races will be live streamed on the championship’s Facebook page, with live timing online.
