Mick Schumacher is groomed as a future Ferrari driver

FIA boss Jean Todt has been close to the Schumacher family for more than two decades. Todt was instrumental in luring Michael Schumacher to Ferrari in 1996 when he dethroned Alain Prost as reigning two-time world champion. 25 years later, it is Michael Schumacher’s son Mick Schumacher who shows how talented he is in his first Formula 1 season. As the reigning F2 champion, supported by the very same team that his father has won five of his seven world titles with, the 21-year-old finds himself in the back with the Haas team, which literally made no investments for the 2021 season the starting grid. Even so, he finished 13th at the Azerbaijan GP and generally completely outclassed his teammate Nikita Mazepin.

“I think it’s fantastic that they have the passion that helps them master the life they have to go through. And I hope he gets a car that allows him to express his talent the way it should,” said the French who heads the motorsport umbrella organization.

The Schumacher family has gone through a traumatic time since Michael Schumacher retired for the second time in 2012. Both Mick and Michael were there in a skiing accident. Michael Schumacher crashed into a rock that caused crippling brain damage. He’s continuing his rehabilitation, but the legendary German, dubbed by many the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time, is unlikely to be his old person. It’s also pretty unfortunate that given his condition, he couldn’t see his son transition to F1.

Over the years, the young Schumacher has proven his talent thanks to the support of the Ferrari Driver Academy. Most recently, he crowned the F2 champion in 2020. That helped his promotion to F1 to the Haas F1 team, which is a close Ferrari partner and uses its engines. Ferrari’s problems with its engine since 2019 were one of the main reasons Haas found himself in the back of the field, as he always ran in midfield.

Since the dramatic rule changes were originally planned for the 2021 season and thanks to the pandemic postponed to 2022 to ensure her survival, she has decided not to develop her car any further and has fully focused her investments on the 2022 car. It even got rid of seasoned drivers like Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen to attract affordable rookies like Schumacher and Mazepin.

Schumacher and Mazepin also receive financial support as one is the son of arguably the greatest driver in the history of the sport and the F2 champion, while the other is the son of a Russian billionaire who sponsored the team and its headquarters.

“My wife played with a chicken with Mick in our garden when he was three years old,” says Todt. “So I’m really excited to see that he loves what he does. That he is attracted to what he does,” he added.
