Ferrari is being encouraged by the Spanish GP RaceFans for the remainder of 2021

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari, Circuit de Catalunya, 2021

Ferrari’s Spanish Grand Prix appearance bodes well for the rest of the 2021 season, believes team principal Mattia Binotto.

The team beat rivals McLaren for the first time this year last weekend and struck a blow in the competition between the two for third place in the constructors’ championship. They left the Circuit de Catalunya separated by five points.

Binotto described his team’s weekend as “pretty healthy”. He said they had made significant advances in tire control and race pace that were previously below the level of their qualifying performance.

“We achieved our goal of scoring points for the constructors, trying to land as high as possible and I think fourth and seventh were a good result,” said Binotto. “We also know that Barcelona is a difficult track. If you do well there you can usually do well on many routes.

“Overall, the car not only developed as expected [in] Quali, I think we had a good pace compared to qualifying and I also think both drivers had a good weekend. “

The team checked their performance after the preliminary round in Portugal to understand where their tire management went wrong, Binotto said. Carlos Sainz Jnr recorded the only pointless end of the season for the team at Autodromo do Algarve. He dropped out of the top 10 after switching to the middle compound and suffering from deterioration.

After Sunday’s Grand Prix, Binotto pointed out that the team was the third fastest race for the second time this year. “It was the same in Imola,” he said.

“I think Bahrain was very specific due to the overheating of the rear wheels and I think we made some mistakes in terms of tire management at Portimao. But I think we have at least focused on this aspect here and have done well. And I think it’s finally good to see that we are at the pace in the race that we had in qualifying. “
