Ferrari F1 boss Binotto announces that he is stepping down from race weekends to focus on “more important” matters

Ferrari F1 boss Mattia Binotto undertakes a veiled dig on Sebastian Vettel amid controversy over the appointment of the Carlos Sainz team

It was a bit of a surprise when reports earlier this week detailed that Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto would not be responsible for the pit wall at the Turkish GP. Instead, Laurent Mekies would act as deputy team principal to fill that void.

Binotto has now talked about keeping the balance between time at the factory and the races. He also stated that the latter is something that the victim should ultimately bear.

Binotto is quoted by Planet F1 as saying, “I think when you look at yourself, you always have to balance your tasks on the racetrack and in the factory.

“The factory is important where we develop and prepare the cars,” he added.

“That will be even more important sometime next year because in the end, when you are in charge of an entire team, the race event is certainly important, but the management of the entire team becomes more and more important.”

Ferrari boss Binotto could miss a few races himself in the 2020 season

The 51-year-old had previously spoken about the positive results his Dyno tests were producing in Maranello. Looking towards 2021, Binotto could miss a few races this season in order to invest time at the grassroots again.

“I think I won’t follow the races myself. As early as 2020 I am thinking about skipping some of the races from Turkey in the last part of the season, ”said Binotto.

It seems like the role of the team leader has been evolving lately. Even Mercedes boss Wolff has admitted that he would take on more responsibility in the company than just the usual tasks and needs of a standard team leader.

The Scuderia have had one of their worst seasons under Binotto

Ferrari hasn’t done it all too often to sit or finish sixth on the constructors’ table. Considering they have been a lot busier in the past, taking wins and podiums at the top of the grid.

From this perspective, a solid local strategic guide might be required if Binotto is to spend more time at the factory. Because it is always important for teams to have a command from the pit wall during the races.
