The Schumacher name is synonymous with previous successes at Ferrari – but the story may not be over yet.

With the Italian team, F1 legend Michael Schumacher won five of his seven world championship titles, now his son Mick is touted as the future driver of the Scuderia.

The 22-year-old has been under contract with the Ferrari Academy since 2019 and is currently driving alongside Russian Nikita Mazepin in his first F1 season with Haas.

He has yet to score a championship point, but that hasn’t stopped Ferrari sporting director Laurent Mekies from ardently talking about the youngster – and at the same time strongly suggests that he could still follow in his father’s footsteps.

“In his first F1 campaign, Mick confirms the speed and values that have characterized him throughout his previous youth career,” he told Marca.

“Speed, determination, effort and willingness to learn. These are some of the qualities he has revealed in our academy and which he has also started to demonstrate with Haas.

“We are very confident that its growth will continue and become even stronger in a team with which it shares ambitions.”

Schumacher senior was with Ferrari from 1996 to 2006 before he advised the team for another three years.

His son, daughter Gina-Marie and wife Corinna all got along in a newly released Netflix documentary about his famous career and how the family got along since the German icon’s skiing accident in December 2013.

Schumacher, 52, spent six months in a medically induced coma and prior to the film, his family had chosen to keep news about his condition and rehabilitation a secret.

However, Mick told Planetf1.com that he was happy with how his father was portrayed in the documentary: “It’s great. I’m very happy and relieved that people really accepted the way we wanted, ”he said.

“And so that people can see the sacrifices he had to make to achieve what he did, and that people now realize that it wasn’t given to him and that he had to work for it.

“I think that’s very good and basically the documentation is about – showing what a hard worker and what kind of fighter he is, and I’m very proud that we were able to convey that with this message.”
