Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto expressed his expectation of making significant progress in the coming season. The Maranello team boss detailed the effort that has gone into preparing the car and engine for the 2022 season.
Explaining the gap between Mercedes and Red Bull in 2021 and progress for 2022, Binotto said:
“If I look at the gap today [to Red Bull and Mercedes], it’s still significant and shows these teams are very strong. We put a lot of effort into 2022 –[it was] The priority [which] was a necessity for us. If we hadn’t done that, it would be difficult to have a competitive car in 2022.”
Reportedly, Ferrari has heavily restructured its team structure for the 2022 season and upgraded its power unit. According to the Ferrari boss, several changes such as new tooling and a new simulator have been made at the factory.
Regarding the new developments in Maranello, the Ferrari boss said:
“Regarding simulations, a lot of effort has been made and many new tools have been developed. We have a new simulator, but it’s not the only one [improvement], just the tip of the iceberg. A lot has happened in terms of aero, wind tunnel, design calculations and tire management.”
Ferrari’s new engine for 2022 is believed to differ significantly from its predecessor previously used in the V6 era. The new hybrid system that will be used in the 2021 season will also accompany its new drive unit for the 2022 season.
Ferrari boss believes they have no reference point to be confident for 2022
Maranello team principal Mattia Binotto believes they cannot be confident with the development of their car and engine just yet.
While he believes they have made significant progress in the competition at the top, he feels there is currently no point of comparison to Red Bull or Mercedes.
Clarifying her mental expectations on the progress made with her 2022 package, Binotto said:
“Are we fully trusted? No, we cannot be confident. We have no references from the others. What we do know is that we put all our effort into it. Whatever we have is the best result of a team effort.” “And that’s important to us… What will be important for us in the next year is to keep growing and that’s also to keep closing the gap on the competition. The new regulations are a clear opportunity.”
Still, progress at Maranello is heating up the rumor mill to predict the pecking order for the 2022 season.
