Formula 1 fans have asked Michael Schumacher to “keep fighting” on the eighth anniversary of his horror ski crash.

Tributes poured in for the legendary German on social media, with #KeepFightingMichael trending on Twitter.

Schumacher, who retired from racing in 2012 with the most victories in F1 history at the time, suffered traumatic head injuries on that day in December 2013 in a skiing accident in the Meribel ski area in the French Alps.

He was wearing a helmet at the time of the impact – but it broke on impact, so the former Ferrari ace needed serious medical attention.

The 52-year-old was flown to a Grenoble hospital shortly afterwards before undergoing two operations and being placed in a medically-related coma for six months.

After regaining consciousness, Schumacher was transferred from the Grenoble University Hospital in France to the Lausanne University Hospital in western Switzerland for rehabilitation.

In September 2014, almost a year after the crash, he was able to return to his spacious house on the shores of Lake Geneva for further rehabilitation. He has stayed there ever since.

In a recent Netflix documentary celebrating Schumacher’s life, his wife Corinna spoke about how much she missed some of her husband’s qualities before the tragic accident.

She said, “Of course I miss Michael every day. But not only do I miss him. The kids, the family, his father, everyone around him. I mean, everyone misses Michael, but Michael is still here. Different, but him is here and that gives us strength, I think. “

Regarding the family life, Corinna added: “We are together, we live together at home. We do therapies, we do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure that he is comfortable and that he just feels our family, our bond. “

Jean Todt, the former manager of the F1 star at Ferrari, is one of the few people outside the family who has access to Schumacher. In 2019 he offered an update on the condition of his friend.

He said: “Michael is in the best of hands and is well looked after in his house. He doesn’t give up and keeps fighting.”

Before adding: “His family is fighting just as much and of course our friendship cannot be the same as it used to be just because there is no longer the same communication as before.”

Earlier this year Todt said: “I can understand why his family and friends are protecting him because we should leave him alone.

“Michael fights, he fights, and we can only hope he improves,” he told the Daily Mail.

Ferrari boss Piero Ferrari commented on Schumacher’s condition at an awards ceremony in October and gave his own update after the ailing star’s visit.

“I’m sorry that we are talking about him today as if he were dead: he is not dead, he is there, but he cannot communicate,” he said.

Schumacher still has countless fans all over the world who wished him all the best on the eighth anniversary of his skiing accident.
