The ailing Force India was saved from ruin by years ago Lawrence walk through a takeover. The team changed its name to Racing Point and is now known as Aston Martin. Walk Sr. explains what was decisive for taking over the F1 team.
Before the takeover, Stroll had a lot to say Chase Carey, the then CEO of Liberty Media. The future of sport was discussed and in these discussions it became clear that there would be a budget cap in the premier class of motorsport. According to Lawrence Stroll, this was ultimately very important in his deliberation, because without a budget cap he would have missed the opportunity.
Great achievements with little money
Plus, Stroll didn’t want to buy a team that was stuck in the stern formula 1 . Force India was actually the perfect option as the formation has always managed to find a place in midfield with limited resources. In fact, the team finished fourth in the constructors’ championship for two years in a row. And that with very low budgets.
Force India had a budget of £ 90 million and only employed 400 people. “They have done more with fewer people than other teams, so it was an incredible opportunity to build on what was already a strong foundation. We didn’t start from scratch.” Walk said talking to GP races magazine .
Racing Point led by Stroll
In mid-2018, Force India was renamed Racing Point. All points (59 points) up to Belgian Grand Prix that year were lost by the team due to the name change. Had Racing Point been able to keep these points, it would have been fifth in the world championship this year. Now the team had to be content with seventh place.
Racing Point took a disappointing seventh place for a year, but in 2020 they were able to return the favor with a decent P4. That could even have been a third place, if the British formation hadn’t deducted fifteen World Championship points for copying parts from Mercedes. 2021 under the Aston Martin banner was by far the most disappointing season since it was acquired by the Lawrence Consortium.
