“We were able to overtake Ocon and Giovinazzi” – Aston Martin had problems all season, but a brilliant strategy meant that Lance Stroll and Sebastian Vettel were both in the points at the Monaco Grand Prix.
After the resounding success of Force India and Racing Point, hopes were high that the legendary Aston Martin brand would return to Formula 1 after a long break. With an outstanding start inspired by James Bond and undoubtedly the best paint job on the track AND Sebastian Vettel joining the outfit, this should be their season.
Unless it’s not. Far from it, in fact. Racing Point / Aston Martin has evolved from McLaren to the best of the others over the past season and evolved into the best of the A’s – Alpine, AlphaTauri and Alfa Romeo. After four disappointing races, the Silverstone-based outside world made a bang back in Monaco, much to the relief of their large global fan base.

Sebastian Vettel opened his standings with his new team and finished a brilliant P5 after outbid Pierre Gasly and his friend Lewis Hamilton. The walk went well too, finishing P8 after the start on grid number 12. If it was Gasly and Hamilton for Vettel, Stroll’s intersection aimed at Ocon and Giovinazzi. Stroll Jr. is sure to be delighted that Aston Martin is now leading the A points table – one point ahead of AlphaTauri and two points ahead of Alpine.
“Yes, it’s always mentally tough, it’s very demanding, you have to stay focused from the first lap to the end. Here, with the walls, there is no margin for error and it is always very intense. Satisfied with the job and good to score a few points.
“It was a good day for us. We had a good strategy, we had a good pace in the first stint when the others were on the soft tires that we were tough on, and we walked very long and had a good pace at the end of that tough stint.
“We were able to overtake Ocon and Giovinazzi, which was a great day for the team with both cars in the points.
“I think we learn every race so definitely some things to take away from this weekend and we’ll be back stronger in a couple of weeks.”
