Four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel will stay in Formula 1 beyond this season after putting pen to paper with Racing Point, which will be renamed Aston Martin F1 Team from 2021.
According to Racing Point, the 33-year-old’s contract, which runs for ‘2021 and beyond,’ “is a clear statement of the team’s ambition to establish themselves as one of the most competitive names in the sport.”
“I’m happy to finally be able to share this exciting news about my future,” said the German. “I am very proud to say that I will be an Aston Martin driver in 2021. It’s a new adventure for me at a truly legendary auto company. I am impressed with the results the team has achieved this year and I think the future looks even brighter.
“The energy and dedication of Lawrence [Stroll] about sport is inspiring and I think we can build something very special together. I still love Formula 1 so much and my only motivation is to be at the forefront. Doing this with Aston Martin will be a great privilege. “
The German had been in talks with billionaire Lawrence Stroll’s team for several months after Ferrari fired him later that year.
At first there didn’t seem to be a place for Vettel, as Sergio Perez had a multi-year contract that ran until the end of 2022, while Stroll’s son Lance sits in the other place.
