Car Week in Monterey features an endless collection of the world’s greatest automobiles
Karl Brewer
In the spectrum of global casualties we’ve faced over the past 18 months, losing last year’s Monterey Car Week ranks fairly low on the priority list. But for dedicated auto enthusiasts, it’s still been a painful blow to arguably the largest collection of cars – and auto events – they look forward to every August.
It also meant that Monterey Car Week 2021, including headlining events like The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering and the 70th Pebble Beach Concours, was greeted even more enthusiastically during last week’s celebrations in the Monterey Peninsula. We were there to capture as much of this automotive magic as possible over a period of four days while also receiving a clear reminder that there is simply no way to see everything that Car Week has to offer.
One of my favorite cars at this year’s Concours d’Elegance was a 1963 427 Cobra Roadster

In addition to the world-class cars from The Quail and The Pebble Beach, we witnessed the debut of several brand new models including the Acura NSX Type S, Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider, Bugatti Bolide, Koenigsegg Gemera and the (new) Lamborghini Countach. We also had the opportunity to speak to several industry executives about their brands and brand new products that will debut during Car Week.

Our first stop was at Aston Martins Display on the 18th green of Pebble Beach Lodge, where we saw the world premiere of the Aston Martin Valkyrie Spider. Inspired by Aston Martin’s F1 racing team and powered by a 1140 hp V12 hybrid engine, the Valkyrie Spider can reach 217 mph (205 km / h with the top off). Only 85 pieces will be produced and all of them are already taken.
Acura introduced the Acura NSX Type S, only 350 of which were produced before the NSX ceased production

Next up was Acura’s reception at the Carmel Valley Ranch Resort, where the luxury brand unveiled its 2022 Acura NSX Type S. The final version of this mid-engined supercar will be the NSX Type S 600 hp (27 more than the previous version), a standard carbon fiber roof and optional paintwork in Gotham Gray. Starting at $ 171,495, with a $ 13,000 Lightweight Package and $ 6,000 matte Gotham Gray paint job that adds up to $ 190,495 for a loaded NSX Type S. Only 70 models are offered with a matt finish, and a total of 350 will be built this last year (300th). for the US market). We’ll miss Acura’s technological marvel, but just like the first-generation NSX, this one will become more and more appreciated over time.
Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Lamborghini, presents the brand new Countach at the auto show The Quail

The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering gives Car Week attendees a glimpse into some of the best classic and modern performance cars ever built. It is also an opportunity for premium manufacturers to showcase their latest products. At this year’s show, the new Countach from Lamborghini and the new Bolide hyper sports car from Bugatti were presented. The Countach is a rare Lamborghini train that doesn’t normally “look back” for inspiration, but to mark the 50th anniversary of the Countach, the Italian automaker decided to produce 112 (everyone is spoken for).

The Bugatti Bolide is the French automaker’s most outrageous model to date. A 1,578-horsepower, $ 4.8 million non-street-legal ground missile that will weigh only 3,200 pounds. Bugatti will only build 40 bolides and offer a factory support crew to help owners properly track these highly sensitive hypercars. And as with every previous model from this brand, we expect them to be snapped up and sold out quickly.
Founder Christion von Koenigsegg and designer Sasha Selipanov present the Gemera super sports car
Karl Brewer
Back at The Lodge at Pebble Beach, before the Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, we took a closer look at the Koenigsegg Gemera. Introduced by the brand’s founder and CEO, Christian von Koenigsegg, the Gemera is a four-seater plug-in hybrid supercar that combines a 3-cylinder 2.0-liter twin-turbo engine with three electric motors to produce 1,700 horsepower. Lightweight materials and technology are used throughout the construction of the Gemera to give it a weight of 2,580 pounds, which translates from zero to 60 mph and a top speed of 250 mph in 1.9 seconds. Christian von Koenigsegg said he developed the four-seater Gemera after his children were born and that he wanted a suitable car to take them with him.

Stellantis’ new global automaker was also present at Car Week, with Alfa Romeo test drives at Folktale Winery, a Jeep Grand Wagoneer fireplace chat at The Lodge in Pebble Beach and the new 630-horsepower Maserati MC20 performance coupe, the top-class Concept Lawn took a coveted spot.
Not every day you see a Lamborghini Countach driving on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach

As always, the highlight of Car Week is the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday on the 18th fairway. In addition to the highest quality classic cars in the world, there are always several automotive themes and models to celebrate at the Concours. This year it was the 50th anniversary of the Lamborghini Countach and the Porsche 917, with several fine examples of both.
