Vettel disinterested in social media criticism of his concerns · RaceFans

Sebastian Vettel, Aston Martin, Hungaroring, 2021

Sebastian Vettel says he does not pay attention to the criticism on social media of his stance on environmental issues.

The Aston Martin driver, who unlike many of his rivals has no social media presence, is increasingly open to the need to reduce emissions and waste. After the British Grand Prix, he and a group of fans spent several hours cleaning up the rubbish around Silverstone.

After criticizing an interview for Der Spiegel, in which he also spoke about his environmental policy, Vettel said he was not interested in negative comments on his attitude.

“I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about,” said Vettel at today’s FIA press conference. “I mean, I’ve had very positive feedback. I haven’t heard anything from the other side.

“I think it’s normal for people to have all kinds of reactions. But I think they probably rated a thousand to one ratio positively.

“I think it is a problem of our time and generally that the squeaky wheel attracts attention. Obviously, you are asking the question about possible negative comments while you should be asking about the positive comments a thousand times. So I think it doesn’t make a lot of sense to spend time looking at this site and seeing the positives [instead]. “

Vettel said he “learned a lot” by volunteering to clean up Silverstone and then visiting a waste processing facility. “I think those involved, the fans who were happy to help, learned a lot [too],” he said.

“We even convinced some of the fans who were still on the track to take part and grab a bag and collect rubbish. I think it was a good thing because we played and cleaned two stands and three and a half hours.

“I wanted to make sure where the stuff went after that, so I’ve learned a lot in that short amount of time.”

Vettel joined Lewis Hamilton in criticizing the Hungarian government’s stance on gay rights. Prime Minister Viktor Orban recently passed a law banning gays from appearing on television programs or educational material for anyone under the age of 18.

“Everyone can do what they want and that’s what it’s about, I think,” said Vettel, who wears sneakers with the Gay Pride rainbow this weekend. “I find it embarrassing that a country in the European Union has to vote or has such laws.

“We have had so many opportunities to learn in the past and I cannot understand why we struggle so that everyone should be free to do what they want, to love who they like.

“There is a lot in that direction to live and let live. It is of course not our job to make the law and that is not our job, but I think just to obviously assist those who are affected by it. “
