After renaming the Racing Point team last winter, Aston Martin unveiled the AMR21 at an event on Wednesday, unveiling the much-anticipated new paint job.
The team adopted the British racing green color that had long been teased, as well as some pink elements that Racing Point was known for through sponsor BWT.
The four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel made his first public appearance with the team at the event after switching from Ferrari in winter to his new team-mate Lance Stroll.
Both drivers will try the new Aston Martin F1 car for the first time on Thursday when it completes a shakedown during a day of shooting at Silverstone.
The AMR21 car is an evolution of last year’s RP20 after wholesale development was frozen according to technical regulations to reduce costs after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Technical Director Andrew Green said the team’s focus over the winter was on restoring the downforce lost by the 2021 rule changes, as well as upgrading the rear of the car to the 2020 Mercedes spec.
“The main driver of performance is aerodynamics, so obviously there’s a big boost on the aerodynamic side,” Green told selected media outlets such as Motosport.com.
“The change to the regulations at the end of last year had a major impact on the aerodynamics and we spent the winter compensating for the losses from the changes to the regulations.
“That was a big focus. We have now changed the rear of the car to the 2020 Mercedes chassis.
“That was always the plan. So these are the two main areas that we focused on over the winter.”
Aston Martin will look to build on an impressive year for Racing Point in 2020, with the team finishing fourth in the Constructors’ Championship and taking their maiden win at the Sakhir Grand Prix.
Team boss Otmar Szafnauer outlined the goals for Aston Martin in 2021, aiming for a continuation of the form from the late season from last year and greater consistency over the season.
“It would be a success to start the season where we left off,” said Szafnauer.
“We were very competitive in the races towards the end of last year.
“Unfortunately we had a couple of critical engine failures towards the end, which meant that we did not get all the points out of this powerful car.
“If we can start with the performance of the car where we left off, but collect points more regularly and score more consistently, then that would be a success for us.”
