Stroll gets a time penalty at the Belgian GP with one lap – Motorsport Week

Stroll gets time penalty in one-lap Belgian GP

Lance Stroll received a time penalty at the Belgian Formula 1 Grand Prix, although the race was held entirely behind the safety car and only lasted one lap.

Stroll was supposed to start from the end of the 20-car field but was promoted one place when Alfa Romeo changed Kimi Raikkonen’s rear wing assembly outside of Parc Ferme conditions.

Stroll then won another spot when Sergio Perez fell on the scouting lap.

As a result, the Canadian toured around in 18th place behind the safety car, but received a 10-second time penalty for an unauthorized rear wing change during the delay.

That downgraded Stroll to last in the last race classification.

The Stewards stated that “although the assembly was changed during the time the race was suspended, the same principles apply as when the race was suspended.”

Aston Martin was told that violating the rules would normally result in a pit lane start, but the stewards considered this to be “meaningless” as all drivers were in the pit lane.

They decided to give Stroll a drive-through penalty, but since it could not be served and the race was shortened, a lesser penalty of 10 seconds was imposed.

With that, Stroll fell behind Raikkonen and Perez in the final standings. The results were officially recorded at the end of the first round.

Elsewhere, eighth-placed Charles Leclerc was examined after Ferrari changed its tires during the start delay on the grid.

However, Ferrari realized his mistake and quickly corrected the situation, and the stewards decided not to take any further action.
