Sebastian Vettel criticizes critics for wearing the Pride jersey at the Hungarian GP

Sebastian Vettel

The Formula 1 driver of the Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team, Sebastian Vettel, commented on his decision to wear the Pride shirt during the Hungarian Grand Prix on January 1st. He put on the rainbow colored Pride shirt before the race during the national anthem ceremony. During a conversation on the BBC’s LGBT sports podcast, four-time world champion Vettel spoke about his decision to wear the jersey.

On the podcast, Vettel said, “I wasn’t nervous or embarrassed about the rainbow colors or what people think, I wanted to send a message and I was very proud of it. I remembered seeing on the news that the current government does not have the most progressive views on certain things. There has been a lot of debate about the laws banning access to a healthy education for all ages and leaving out some parts of what I think is totally wrong. So the idea came about that we have that moment before the race where we can get certain messages out and I thought it would be a good opportunity to send a little sign. “

Sebastian Vettel was disqualified from the Hungarian GP

The 34-year-old Vettel wore a helmet with a rainbow over it at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix. He also wore a Pride-colored face mask and the t-shirt that said – Same Love. When asked about the message in his shirt, Vettel said, “It’s the name of a beautiful Macklemore song, and I think it nicely explains some of the misperceptions people have.” After Vettel’s generous gesture, the LGBTQ + community praised Vettel and supported Vettel. Mercedes drivers and reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton also supported Vettel on his Instagram and said that he will come to him next time with the same jersey.

At the Hungarian GP, Vettel finished second behind winner Esteban Ocon and ahead of third-placed Hamilton. However, he was later disqualified from the race because less than 1 liter of fuel from his race was found after the race. Vettel was also called by the stewards for wearing the Pride T-shirt during the national anthem ceremony. The FIA only allowed players to wear the t-shirt before the national anthem ceremony and not during it.
