Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher says Aston Martin is wasting his time contesting Sebastian Vettel’s disqualification from the Hungarian Grand Prix due to insufficient fuel in the tank at the end of the race.
The FIA commissioners were only able to get a third of the required 1 liter of fuel from Vettel’s Aston Martin brand car, after finishing a sensational second place last Sunday. Given Aston Martin’s right to appeal, Vettel’s car was confiscated, with Aston Martin insisting that more than a liter of fuel be safely kept on board.
A hearing between representatives from Aston Martin, Formula 1 and the FIA is planned for August 9th.
“I don’t know why you want to appeal at all,” said Schumcher, brother of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, to Sky Germany. “The rules are clear. You need to produce a liter of fuel for the samples. Failure to do this is disqualification.
“So it’s a clear mistake by the team. From my point of view, the only possible reason is that when the car was refueled, about two liters (fuel) were missing from the race. “

When asked whether the complete disqualification was a justified punishment, Schumacher replied: “Absolutely.
“With the weight alone, the car would definitely have been three to five hundredths faster per lap. It’s not difficult to find out how much of a difference that makes over the entire race.”
Before the disqualification, Vettel finished in second place with nine tenths ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton was elevated to second place in the finishing order after the DQ.
