Race of Champions 2022: Vettel and Schumacher join forces

Four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel will compete together with up-and-coming star Mick Schumacher at the ROC Snow + Ice World Final in Pite Havsbad, Sweden, from February 4 to 6, 2022.

Vettel, who currently drives for the Aston Martin F1 team, led the F1 drivers’ championship for four years in a row between 2010 and 2013 and became one of the most successful drivers of the modern Formula 1 era.

As the winner of both the FIA Formula 3 European Championship (2018) and the FIA Formula 2 Championship (2020), Schumacher currently drives in Formula 1 for the Uralkali Haas F1 team and is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy.

Vettel has taken part in nine ROC World Finals and was crowned “Champion of Champions” in 2015 at the ROC London in a final showdown with Le Mans legend Tom Kristensen.

The event in Sweden marks Mick Schumacher’s second ROC appearance.

Vettel and Schumacher will fight for the title “Champion of Champions” in the individual competition of the ROC and together as Team Germany they will compete against two driver teams for the prestigious ROC Nation’s Cup.

Vettel has teamed up with Mick’s father and F1 legend Michael Schumacher to build a dynasty at the ROC Nations Cup and win six titles from 2007 to 2012. On their first appearance, Vettel and Schumacher Junior took second place behind the Nordic team in the ROC Nations Cup in Mexico in 2019.

The two German Formula 1 drivers will join the growing roster of racing stars and legends at the upcoming ROC “Snow + Ice” world final in Pite Havsbad, Sweden.

Vettel teamed up with father and son Michael Schumacher a decade ago and now Mick

“I’m really looking forward to going back to the Race Of Champions and representing Germany together with Mick,” said Vettel. “At ROC Mexico we finished second in the ROC Nations Cup, so our goal is to get even better in Sweden.”

After 15 years in big stadiums, ROC Sweden promises to be a unique challenge for drivers of various racing disciplines. Not only will the course in Sweden be the fastest and widest course in ROC’s thirty year history, but it will also be run on the unpredictable surface of the frozen ocean and in a variety of racing cars.

“The competition will be very strong, especially from the Nordic drivers, who have a lot more experience on snow and ice than we do,” continued Vettel.

The ROC “Champion of Champions” individual race was launched in 1988 and the ROC Nations Cup was introduced as a team competition in 1999 and has been an integral part of every ROC World Final ever since.

The ROC Nations Cup, which takes place on the first day of competition, has created some intense rivalries and enduring dynasties, including the six-year record dominance of Team Germany from 2007 to 2012.

“Representing Germany together with Sebastian will certainly be great fun and of course we want to win a trophy again,” said the F2 and F3 champion and the current Haas driver Schumacher.

Mick: I’m so excited to meet all of the other drivers

“We have to continue the success of Team Germany and fight for victory, and I’m sure we will both take that very seriously! The other teams, especially the Nordic ones, may have more experience in ice skating, but we will try to balance this with our motivation and resilience over the days of the event.

“In any case, I’m really looking forward to meeting all the other drivers and spending time with them on the Race Of Champions weekend. Snow and ice promise to make this ROC event very special, and I’m more than sure that the drivers in Sweden will have an amazingly good time together, ”emphasized the young Schumacher.

The upcoming ROC event is the latest innovation from race organizers who have been bringing together new experiences for the stars of motorsport and their fans for decades.

“ROC has to offer something special in the equipment and in the racing environment so that these world-class riders can venture all the way into the Arctic,” said Fredrik Johnsson, President of ROC.

“I think this event in Sweden piques everyone’s curiosity, including Mick and Sebastian, who both asked a lot of questions when we met at the Mexican Formula 1 Grand Prix.

“Sebastian is one of the most successful drivers in ROC history and Mick impressed everyone on his ROC Mexico debut. It will be very interesting to see how they adapt to the new ROC Snow + Ice course! ”Johnson concluded.

Over the three decades, the event has been a battlefield for European racing legends

With a unique winner-takes-all format that gives participants the opportunity to test their talents against competitors they would normally never meet, ROC attracts many of the most successful racing drivers from all disciplines of global motorsport.

The event is known for attracting superstars from all of the leading leagues in global motorsport, including Formula 1, Le Mans, Nascar, IndyCar, World Rally and Rallycross.

Over the past three decades, the event has been a battlefield for European legends such as Michael Schumacher, Tom Kristensen, Sebastian Vettel, Sébastien Loeb, Petter Solberg, Mattias Ekström, Colin McRae, David Coulthard, Marcus Grönholm and Jenson Button; along with other international stars such as Nascar champions Jimmie Johnson, Kurt and Kyle Busch and Jeff Gordon; Ryan Hunter-Reay and Josef Newgarden of IndyCar; Formula E champion Lucas Di Grassi; Legendary extreme sports star Travis Pastrana; and Indy 500 champions Juan-Pablo Montoya and Helio Castroneves.

As part of the ROC’s recent innovations, the equipment presented at the 2022 event in Sweden will be powered by many electric and 100% fossil-free biofuel engines.

The cars announced so far include the more than 1000 hp FC1-X, which accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 1.5 seconds, and the FIA RX2e – another electric rallycross car with an output of 250 kW (335 hp) and up to 510 Nm torque – and the new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

The RX2e accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in less than 3.3 seconds, while the GT4 develops 425 hp from fossil-free biofuel.

The SuperCar Lites will return to ROC, but this time on biofuel.

“It is very nice to see how many new sustainability initiatives the Race Of Champions is implementing in order to become a climate-positive event in the coming years”, Vettel continued.
