The Stroll and Verstappen races ended prematurely in Baku after two separate punctures, resulting in high-speed accidents.
Both drivers rode on Pirelli’s C3 hard tires and after the race, Isola announced that Pirelli had found cuts on Lewis Hamilton’s left rear tire.
“Obviously we haven’t had time for a full inspection and we have to send the tires back to Milan,” said Isola. “The plan is to air them to Milan tomorrow and have them tested in our laboratories on this set as well as some of the other sets used in the same stint.
“When we looked at the tires that were used in the second stint, we found no evidence or anything for most of the drivers. I believe that I can rule out that failures were due to tire wear, as it is not tire wear.

“We found a cut on the inside shoulder of a tire on the rear left tire that Hamilton had used in the same stint. Only the tread is cut in one piece and when the red flag was raised and Lewis came into the pit lane and changed the tires, we were able to find the cut. “
While Pirelli won’t give a conclusive answer until it does a full investigation, its initial verdict is that debris could be the likely cause of the tire failures in Baku because it was found on Hamilton’s tires.

“According to the teams, there was no sign or warning,” added Isola. “We need to get the telemetry from them, but they told me there was no warning, no vibration, nothing to think of the tire.
“These are the most important elements that have been gathered in this short period of time. Keep in mind that the tires of the crashed cars were back in the garage and in our assembly area a few minutes ago, so we will need some time to analyze them. I do not want to draw a preliminary conclusion.
“It seems that it is a cut through rubble. It’s not a more heavily loaded tire, we have evidence of another cut in the same position. Both accidents occurred on more or less the same part of the track and with a few laps difference we have other cars with the same number of laps, the same tires, with no problems. “
