Hülkenberg could take on a dual role at Aston Martin / Mercedes

The German impressed both Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll as deputies at Racing Point last year when they were attacked by the corona virus.

Though this season’s outings didn’t result in a full-time racing seat, his ability to quickly catch up on the game and his current knowledge of F1 machines should give him a chance to be the man to be slotted again if anything on the racetrack, renaming happens to Aston Martin Team

Talks are currently underway to formalize his position, but it is believed he could take on an expanded role that includes Aston Martin, who is also making him available for Mercedes at select events.

One possibility that is being examined is to have it free for Mercedes if the German automaker needs a replacement for Lewis Hamilton or Valtteri Bottas and its regular reserves are employed elsewhere.

While Mercedes announced earlier this week that Stoffel Vandoorne and Nyck de Vries were the reserve drivers this year, their involvement in Formula E means that they will not be able to compete in every F1 race.

There are currently three direct clashes of F1 and FE races this year. The Spanish Grand Prix on May 9 meets Monaco FE, the Monaco GP meets the Marrakech FE on May 23 and the Azerbaijan GP meets Santiago on June 6.

Additionally, Santiago’s double-headed ball, which has continued travel restrictions due to the coronavirus, could make it difficult for Vandoorne and de Vries to get to the Canadian GP on June 13.

Although a final decision has not yet been made, there are discussions about making Hulkenberg Mercedes available for four laps in case something should happen.

Earlier this week, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff indicated that Hulkenberg could be part of a role at Mercedes.

“We all know what he’s capable of,” he told Sky Germany. “”[He is] One of the top drivers who somehow didn’t have the last chance to drive for a top team. Having such a resource on the team is of course interesting. We are of course open to that. “

When asked when a decision could be made, whether Hulkenberg might get a role, Wolff said: “The question is not when the decision will be made, but when it will be announced.”
