F1-News - Sebastian Vettel: Aston Martin driver explains the reasons for the Pride jersey at the Hungarian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel says he wanted to “send a message” after wearing a Pride shirt to protest against the Hungarian government’s anti-LGBTQ + legislation ahead of last month’s Hungaroring Grand Prix.

The German wore the t-shirt at the national anthem ceremony before the race. The 34-year-old said he was “proud” to support the LGBTQ + community.

“I wasn’t nervous or embarrassed about the rainbow colors or what people think,” Vettel told the BBC.

“I wanted to send a message and I was very proud of it.

“I remembered seeing on the news that the current government is not very progressive on certain things.

“There has been a lot of debate about the laws banning access to a healthy education for all ages and leaving out some parts, which I think is completely wrong.

“So the idea came up that we have that moment before the race where we can get certain messages out and I thought it would be a good opportunity to send a little sign.”

The German driver had a rainbow on the side of his sneakers, on his helmet and a Pride-colored face mask as he walked the route.

The front of his T-shirt read “Same Love”, which was inspired by a song released in 2012 by American hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

“It’s the name of a beautiful Macklemore song,” added Vettel.

“I think it nicely explains some of the wrong perceptions people have.

It doesn’t matter what your skin color, no matter what your background, no matter where you’re from, no matter who you fall in love with. In the end, you just want equal treatment for everyone.
