Aston Martin could run into trouble next season. Team boss Otmar Szafnauer says that the team had to work extra hard in early 2021, which was at the expense of the 2022 car.

2021 was more work than expected

“We had to work longer and more intensively on the 2021 model to make music again than we originally planned,” reveals Szafnauer on SpeedWeek.com. According to the team boss, the work on the car in 2021 was at the expense of the car in 2022. “In addition, we were limited in the development options below the budget ceiling.”

Allocating resources between 2021 and 2022 was already a tricky task, according to Szafnauer, but the bumpy start into 2021 seems to have made it even more arduous for Aston Martin. “It’s hard to say how that will affect 2022.”

The problem for Aston Martin was the fact that the low-rake car didn’t seem to benefit from the new ground rules. The incline on which the car is parked cannot simply be made steeper, says Szafnauer.
