October 20 (Reuters) – Former German Formula 1 driver Nico Hulkenberg will get a first impression of IndyCar on Monday with a one-time evaluation test for Arrow McLaren SP at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama, the team said in a statement.

The 34-year-old is currently the reserve driver for the Aston Martin F1 team, which will be lining up in Austin, Texas this weekend.

Hülkenberg drove twice in Formula 1 last year, replacing the Mexican Sergio Perez, who had tested positive for COVID-19, and the uncomfortable Canadian Lance Stroll at the Nürburgring at Silverstone.

As the winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Hülkenberg made 179 career starts in Formula 1.

“I’m excited to try out an Indy car and see what it’s about,” he said. “While I don’t have any plans to drive in IndyCar right now, driving a car for the first time and getting a feel for the series will be great.”

Arrow McLaren SP is considering racing a third car in the US series at some point, with Mexican Pato O’Ward and Swede Felix Rosenqvist confirmed for 2022.
