Vettel was excluded from his second place at the Hungaroring after the FIA was unable to take the minimum one liter of fuel required for the technical inspections after the race.
Aston Martin was initially confident that beyond the 0.3 liters the FIA received, there was more than enough fuel left in the car but was inaccessible due to a failure of the fuel pump system.
According to telemetry data recorded during the race, Aston Martin had estimated the car should have had at least 1.44 liters more fuel than the FIA had received.
After the Hungarian Grand Prix, Vettel’s Aston Martin car was confiscated by the FIA and taken to the umbrella organization’s facilities in France in case it was needed as evidence for a court hearing.
Aston Martin immediately appealed, also demanding a right to review the FIA commissioners’ decision to disqualify Vettel after finding the disqualification to be unfair.
Despite new evidence that a fuel cell pressure relief value had in fact not prevented fuel from being pumped into the tank, the FIA denied the request for review.
As part of the Aston Martin investigations it was also discovered that the technical malfunction had led to a fuel leak, which meant that there was not as much fuel in the car as Aston Martin initially suspected.
While the evidence presented to the FIA regarding the failure was new, the fact that it was unable to demonstrate that more than a liter of fuel was on board meant the termination of the case.
After considering his position, Aston Martin has now decided to withdraw his appointment – Vettel’s second place is gone.
In a tweet posted on Thursday, Aston Martin said, “After reviewing our position and taking note of the FIA stewards’ verdict that there was clear new evidence of a fuel system failure, we nevertheless withdrew our appeal as we did.” Are of the opinion that this is the case outweighs the benefits of being heard. “
Vettel’s confirmed exclusion means Lewis Hamilton is second to Esteban Ocon in the race, while Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz takes the final podium in third.
