You can own Mario Andretti’s personal Alfa Romeo GTV-6

You can own Mario Andretti's personal Alfa Romeo GTV-6

If you’re thinking of adding a charming, drivable hatch from the eighties to your collection but are looking for something with ancestry, we have the car for you. This 1981 Alfa Romeo GTV-6, formerly owned by Indy 500 winner and Formula 1 champion Mario Andretti, is for sale.

Andretti, America’s most famous racing driver, drove for the Alfa Romeo F1 team in 1981 and appeared in GTV-6 marketing materials and advertisements. So it makes sense that he could get a street car from the brand to drive around. Original documents show the car will be delivered to Andretti with 175 miles on the clock. According to Autoblog, he kept it for a full year.

The car itself, done in Grigio over tan leather, appears to be in perfect condition. The paint, glass, body and cabin are supposed to be original, and with just under 36,000 miles on the clock, we tend to believe that. The pictures included in the list show a clean, rust-free underbody and a healthy looking engine compartment.

This ex-Andretti Alfa failed to sell during RM Sotheby’s’s “Driving into Summer” event in May 2020 and achieved a top bid of just $ 28,000. LBI Limited sellers are looking for $ 48,000 to part with the car now. The dealer notes that over $ 7,000 worth of maintenance was recently done to keep it in tip-top condition.

Would you pay nearly $ 48,000 to own a low-mileage GTV-6 that formerly belonged to Mario Andretti himself? Let us know in the comments.
