After a campaign in 2020 in which the Alfa Romeo duo Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi struggled at times to make a big impression in midfield, the Swiss team was given more encouragement by their run in Bahrain.
The new C41 showed signs that it had taken a step forward over its predecessor, and on the final day of testing, Raikkonen was fourth fastest.
After Williams was caught in a fight with Alfa Romeo and Haas in the back of midfield that year, Raikkonen’s form was of paramount importance to Russell.
“Kimi looked very, very fast,” said Russell of the final day’s performance.
“I have to do him credit. While I need to dig deeper into the data, at the moment I would say they look like the most surprising team.
“I can’t honestly tell you where I think we are compared, but at first glance Kimi looked very quick.”
Giovinazzi, who is entering his third full season with Alfa Romeo, said he was optimistic about the progress the team has made.

“I am happy with the work in Sakhir,” he told Autosport.
“Although these are still tests, I think the first impression with the car is still important.
“Despite the difficult conditions with wind and sand on the first day, I never had any particular problems.
“Even in difficult conditions, the car proved stable and was a pleasure to drive.
“I would say this is a well-born project and we can be pleased with the work we have done to prepare for the season.”
Although F1 teams have struggled to restore the downforce lost this season due to changes in aero rules, Giovinazzi thinks the new Alfa Romeo is actually better than last year.
“The new regulations and the new tires are aimed at reducing power, but I have to say that I’ve seen a lot of progress,” he said.
“The front of the car reacts faster, especially in slow sections, and in general the feel is positive on all corners.
“The unit has also improved. It was an instant sensation and this will no doubt help us get closer to our rivals. “
