Kimi Raikkonen has admitted that Alfa Romeo’s competitiveness in 2021 will not affect whether he continues to drive in Formula 1.
2021 is Raikkonen’s 19th season in F1 and the Finn has 330 Grand Prix starts in his name – the most in the history of the sport.
Alfa Romeo appears to have taken a step forward in terms of performance and is benefiting from the profits Ferrari has made on its powerplant.
Raikkonen and his teammate Antonio Giovinazzi narrowly missed the points at the Bahrain Grand Prix at the start of the season, but the duo was clearly ahead of Williams and Haas – Alfa’s main rivals in 2020.
“I doubt it will make any difference what happens next year,” said Raikkonen. “The better we can do it, the more fun it is of course, not only for us drivers, but also for the team, and everyone is happier, the better we do it.
“The years when you’re not exactly where you want to be are always long years and it’s not that much fun and you can see that on everyone’s face. Wherever we end up in the first race we will of course keep working and trying to improve and hopefully we will be where we want to be and fight for points on a regular basis. Sure it won’t be easy, everyone wants to be up there, so we just have to keep working. “

Raikkonen judges the performance of the Alfa Romeo C41 and believes that this is a clear “step forward” over its predecessor.
“Yes, of course, we have a bit more power and it is definitely a step forward,” added Raikkonen. “In many ways, one would expect all manufacturers to do the same depending on how much they have improved or not compared to last year. It’s a step in the right direction, but it’s the same as with the car. You always want more, but it’s going in the right direction. “
