Verstappen fastest of Gasly in opening training

F1 Styrian GP: Verstappen fastest from Gasly in opening practice session

Verstappen was 0.256 seconds ahead of Gasly and 0.422 seconds ahead of his title rival, but all three could have been beaten by Valtteri Bottas had the Finn not gone too far through the final corner as he usurped the Red Bull’s position at the front would take the times during the qualifying simulation efforts in the middle of FP1.

Lando Norris took first place with 1: 08.864 minutes in the early run on the medium tires at the Red Bull Ring, which was quickly pushed down by a flood of faster times on the yellow-walled rubber.

Charles Leclerc put in a 1: 08.011s before Hamilton took the benchmark below the 1: 08s bracket for the first time with a 1: 07.809s as the riders are quick every time they do a lap in the extended early runs Found time.

One minute after Hamilton’s initial personal best, Verstappen put in a 1: 07.454 minutes that exceeded his title rival the next time – to 1: 07.056 minutes.

In the wake of the Mercedes, Verstappen immediately stole back to the top with one minute of 06.936 minutes.

Verstappen finally worked the fastest time on the media down to 1: 06.511s at the end of the first 20 minutes – after losing a slower time that was briefly considered the best time of the session because he ran too far out of the last corner was an area where several drivers lost time because they exceeded the route limit.

Mercedes led the field on the soft tires at the beginning of the middle segment, with Hamilton bringing the red-walled rubber back to the top in 1: 06.390 minutes.

Bottas then jumped up the order after finishing the run with medium-sized tires and was fastest with a time of 1: 06.386 minutes – his second lap on the softs – after 25 minutes of the session.

Hamilton then drove back 1: 06.332 minutes ahead of his teammate, which was his best time to the end of the session, even though his car ran the big curbs beyond the normal red and white curbs behind the penultimate corner (the lap was legal because Hamilton’s right Wheels remained on the normal curbs), which created a large cloud of dust as the plank of the car hit and rubbed the larger curbs.

Red Bull then sent their cars on softs shortly after halfway through the session, but the time they were aiming for now was Gaslys 1: 06.116s – the AlphaTauri driver was among the leading drivers throughout the first few races.

Verstappen duly took first place with his first round on the softs, a minute of 05,910 minutes, which was considered the best time for the remainder of FP1 as the teams switched to long-term data collection in the final 20 minutes, with the second session on Friday currently from rain.

Bottas drove behind Verstappen and drove another flying lap on the softs, setting the fastest times of the session in the first two sectors.

But the Mercedes driver ran too far at the exit of the last corner and lost more than 0.2 seconds to Verstappen, although the time was soon canceled at this point anyway because of the violation of the track restrictions.

Bottas therefore remained fourth in the order, the Finn ran close to several other cars during the later cross-country skiing, with Antonio Giovinazzi from Alfa Romeo (ninth) asking why the Mercedes crossed the long stretch up the hill to turn 3 a point in the last few minutes.

Yuki Tsuonda underpinned AlphaTauri’s strong start with a fifth place in 1: 06.397 minutes, the rookie finished ahead of Fernando Alonso – who lost several times when he ran too far through the last corners on the medium and soft tires – and Esteban Ocon .

Lance Stroll finished eighth for Aston Martin ahead of Giovinazzi, Charles Leclerc completed the top 10 for Ferrari.

The Scuderia drivers had both moments at Turn 1, with Leclerc saving himself a major oversteer after climbing the big yellow curb in the start phase of the exit, while teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. finished his middle distance time just before 30 minutes finished with a twist at this point.

Sainz lost the rear of his SF21 when he came to the large curb at the exit of Turn 1 and his car circled to the left and turned inside the track – the pit exit temporarily blocked, which forced Bottas to stop and wait for the Ferrari turning as he exited the pits as Sainz spun forward.

Sainz was 11th in the final ranking.

At the end of the field, Robert Kubica, who represented Kimi Raikkonen in FP1 at Alfa, shared the Haas drivers, with Mick Schumacher taking 18th place ahead of Kubica and Nikita Mazepin.

All three of the trio at the end of the times had moments in tight Turn 3, an uphill right-hand turn in the opening minutes of the session, when Kubica Raikkonen’s car spun at slow speed while driving the hard tires for the first few laps.
