Instead of splitting the day of shooting between their racers like other teams did prior to the 2021 season, Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi were forced to watch from the sidelines as one-time race winner Kubica ran twenty-nine laps on the short layout of the Barcelona-Catalonia circuit.
The idea of the run was to do some installation runs ahead of the abbreviated pre-season testing program later this month Bahrain International Circuitwith only three running days before the start of the season on the same route at the end of March.
“It’s always a special moment to be the first to drive a new car,” Kubica looks back. “Today’s focus was to ensure everything is working as planned and that all systems are operational. So performance wasn’t a goal, but that doesn’t take away from the thrill of driving such a car.
“The car felt good and I’m looking forward to driving it again later in the season.”
Frederic Vaseurthe Alfa Romeo team principal and the CEO of Sauber Motorsport AGsays the short test was an essential step in preparing for the upcoming season and they will be able to analyze at least some data before the test in Bahrain.
“Today’s work is a crucial step in our preparation for the season and I’m pleased to report that the day went as planned,” said Vasseur. “We were able to complete all of the scheduled reviews and can now focus on analyzing this initial data and preparing for the next test in two weeks.”
