Kubica gets another Alfa Romeo F1 training outing in Bahrain

Kubica, who is Alfa’s reserve driver, will take over Kimi Raikkonen’s car for opening practice on the Sakhir race track on Friday.

The former F1 driver from BMW Sauber, Renault and Williams drove in the DTM for the customer BMW squad ART after leaving Williams at the end of 2019.

He has already participated in three more training sessions for Alfa this season after joining the squad earlier this year.

Kubica’s other training appearances took place in the opening phase of the late season, starting with the Styrian GP, a week later in Hungary and then with the FP1 for the 70th anniversary GP in Silverstone.

“I’m very happy to be back in the driver’s seat for the first time since August,” said Kubica.

“It may sound like a long time, but my season was very busy with my simulator work in the factory and my DTM program. So it felt like it was going pretty quickly.

“Now that my DTM season is over, I would like to return to my role as Alfa Romeo Racing all day. There is still a lot to struggle and I am confident that my work will make a positive contribution to the team’s efforts. ”

Alfa team boss Frederic Vasseur said: “We are all delighted that Robert is back in the car for the first RP.

“His contribution to the team has been important so far this season. In order to be able to optimally use its experience and skills here in Bahrain, the team can continue on its current path.

“Sakhir is a track that he knows very well and that will really help our work this weekend.”

Raikkonen will return to the cockpit of his C39 for the remainder of the weekend in Bahrain.

This weekend’s race will be held at the Sakhir circuit with the usual 3,362-mile layout before continuing the F1 season in the same location next week for the return leg of the campaign’s final triple header.

This race takes place on the shorter, 2,201 mile outside loop configuration.
