Ilott wins Alfa Romeo F1 in rookie test from Abu Dhabi

Ilott wins Alfa Romeo F1 in rookie test from Abu Dhabi

F2 star Ilott had a test trip with the Hinwil-based team in Barcelona last May, and he was supposed to have an FP1 session with Haas at the Eifel GP at the Nürburgring in October just because bad weather caused the day to be canceled.

Mick Schumacher, who was supposed to drive for Alfa Romeo in Germany, is expected to be behind the wheel of a Haas in Abu Dhabi before taking over a racing seat for the US team next year.

Ilott is battling for the 2020 F2 title after taking three wins and four pole positions after an impressive second season in this category.

He is currently 22 points behind Schumacher in second place in the championship, only the two upcoming Bahrain rounds are due.

“I am really looking forward to being in the car again in Abu Dhabi and I am grateful to Alfa Romeo Racing and the Ferrari Driver Academy for this opportunity,” said the 22-year-old.

“Every chance to drive a Formula 1 car is important: It is an opportunity to expand my experience not only in the cockpit, but also in working with the team: the engineers and crew are among the best in the world , and there’s so much to learn from them, so I’ll make sure it counts. “

“Callum is one of the most promising young drivers to come through the ranks, as demonstrated by his performance in F2 this year,” said Fred Vasseur, CEO of Alfa Romeo.

“He was unlucky to have missed the chance to prove his skills last month when the FP1 at the Nürburgring was canceled. That’s why he deserves his trip with the team in Abu Dhabi.

“His attitude and work ethic made a very positive impression on the team when he tested with us last year. We look forward to testing with him in Abu Dhabi.”

Ferrari also announced that Robert Shwartzman and Antonio Fuoco will drive for the squad in the same test in Abu Dhabi.

Both the F2 race winner Shwartzman and Fuoco, who acts as a Ferrari development driver, completed a seat adjustment in the SF1000 on Thursday.
