On Monday, Alfa Romeo announced Bottas as the successor to Kimi Raikkonen for 2022, paving the way for Russell’s eagerly anticipated promotion from Williams to Mercedes.
The Finn leaves Mercedes after five seasons and helps him win four constructors’ championships.
Speaking ahead of the Italian Grand Prix this weekend, Bottas was told he would not be Hamilton’s team-mate in 2022.
“I never like to share details about how things went because the way things work is pretty private,” Bottas said. “I can say that before Spa I knew what was going to happen.

“Budapest was the last race before the summer break and at that point no decisions were made, but then we made the decisions together in the summer before Spa.”
Looking ahead to his new adventure with Alfa Romeo, Bottas admits that he’s “excited” about the challenge ahead of him to get the team up in the pecking order.

“Because it’s exciting, it’s a great brand, they have a great history in motorsport. I believe they can have a bright future based on the information I know and hopefully I can help, ”added Bottas.
“It’s something new, something exciting for me, and it’s going to be a bit of a project for me. There will undoubtedly be a lot to do, but I will give all my know-how to help them improve from this season onwards. “
Alfa Romeo has had a difficult 2021 season with just three points behind them, just ahead of Haas in the constructors’ championship.
Bottas is confident that the team has the ambition and drive that gives him the motivation he needs in Formula 1.
“I can’t tell you everything, but you are serious about the future,” he said. “Alfa Romeo has been involved as a brand for a number of years. I don’t want to share too much, but we have high expectations, very high goals and that is very motivating for me. “
