Alfa Romeo’s F1 team was renamed when Kubica switched to the reserve role

Alfa Romeo F1 team rebranded as Kubica joins in reserve role

Kubica returned to the F1 grid with Williams in 2019 after being long absent from his life-threatening rally crash eight years earlier.

The 35-year-old scored Williams ‘only point in a miserable season for the Grove-based team, making room for Nicholas Latifi in Williams’ 2020 driver line-up.

Kubica has been wooed for a simulator role by Haas and Racing Point instead, but will bond with Alfa Romeo instead.

His new role is against the background of a “multi-year partnership” between the team and the Polish oil company PKN Orlen, in which the Swiss-based team will compete next year as “Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN”.

“I am very excited to start this new chapter in my career when I come to Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN,” said Kubica.

“This team has a special place in my heart and I’m happy to see some of the faces from my years in Hinwil here.

“Time and circumstances are obviously different, but I believe I will find the same determination and hunger for success. I look forward to helping Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN take the next step forward.”

Kubica drove for the F1 outfit founded by Peter Sauber between 2007 and 2009 when it competed with factory support from the German manufacturer BMW.

During this time he won the Canadian Grand Prix in 2008 and finished fourth in the drivers’ championship.

The team kept an unchanged line-up of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi for 2020 and have confirmed that their next F1 challenger will be called “C39”.

“We’re also very happy to see Robert back home and we can’t wait to work with him,” said team principal Frederic Vasseur of Kubica.

“He’s a driver who needs no introduction: one of the most brilliant of his generation and one who has shown the real importance of human determination in his struggle to return to racing after his rally accident.

“His feedback will be invaluable as we move our team forward.”
