One team that is almost certainly looking forward to the switch to softer tire compounds for the second race of this weekend at Silverstone is Alfa Romeo after a frustrating first lap on the track.

Both Antonio Giovinazzi and Kimi Räikkönen had good starts and were 12th and 12th in the first part of the British Grand Prix on Sunday the second half lacked performance on this mix.

“We looked good in the beginning and climbed to 12th place, just behind [Esteban] Ocon and [Sebastian] Vettel and shows good pace, ”said Vasseur. “We were looking for a good result up to the stops on course, but in the end we couldn’t get any further after switching to hard tires.

“With another race here at Silverstone, we have to comb through the data and find the best way to improve our performance for next week.”

Giovinazzi’s only top 10 place this season came in the first race in Austria

Where Alfa Romeo should be helped are the compounds for the next race, with Pirelli taking a step softer with the tires for Sunday’s 70th anniversary Grand Prix. Giovinazzi is hoping for a better result as he fought for points up to a time penalty for violating a safety car.

“I got off to a good start and made up a few places, made up one place with a very good pit stop by the crew, but after the second safety car I had problems with my pace – and I lost two with a five-second penalty more places at the end, ”said Giovinazzi.

“We were hoping to be a bit more competitive so we have to look at the data and improve everything to take a step forward when we race here again next week.”

Raikkonen reacts angrily to the confusion at the Alfa Romeo box

There was a late-race drama for Raikkonen that was almost overlooked given the front runner’s punctures as the Finn suffered a broken front wing, but he says he wasn’t aware that an incident caused the problem.

“Definitely not the race we expected,” said Raikkonen. “At the beginning of the race I thought we had a chance to fight, but after the stops our pace wasn’t good enough to keep up with the others. We have to see how we can improve our performance for next week’s race.

“In the last few laps I had a front wing damage, but that made no difference in the end. I’m not sure what happened, we need to investigate. “
