Alfa Romeo F1 passes crash test with revised "extreme" nose after initially failing

Last month, the Alfa Romeo F1 team suffered a setback while preparing for the 2020 season. As it turned out, their car failed a crash test and they had to go back to the drawing board and try again.

There is good news this time as the new version is said to have an extreme nose. However, some interventions were required to comply with legal safety restrictions. The Swiss-Italian team homologated the C39 chassis and repeated the failed frontal crash test.

The early design of the extreme nose solution initially failed the dynamic crash. After revising the concept, the technical staff revised the solution.

What solutions did Alfa Romeo have?

It was also noteworthy that the predecessor of the C39 took over the “Manta cape” under the nose. In fact, they implemented it before the Maranello team did at the 2019 Singapore GP.

This resulted in a very narrow nose profile with the front extractor evolving with a series of interesting steps in search of aerodynamic downforce at the front.

For the 2020 season, Alfa Romeo F1 decided to keep the two current drivers Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi. The main goal of the duo will be to bring the Alfa brand higher in the constructors’ championship.

Last year they finished ninth, just ahead of the misfiring Williams F1 team. At the moment, the teams that are already okay with the chassis homologation: Racing Point, Ferrari, Williams, Haas and Toro Rosso. Alfa Romeo will soon be on that list as advances on their car continue.

According to Motorsport Italy, Mercedes must complete a rear-end test, while Red Bull, Renault and McLaren do not yet have to receive the green light from the FIA.

Of these teams, only McLaren, Mercedes and Renault have announced a start date. So it will be a race against time to get your car approved before the start date.
