Toto Wolff is not easily fooled. Mercedes was able to stop Red Bull to win the season opener in Bahrain. However, Toto Wolff is aware that it wasn’t the pace of the car that Mercedes won the race. Instead, it was a combination of pragmatic strategy decisions and the brilliance of Lewis Hamilton that enabled the reigning champions to beat Red Bull.
Max Verstappen qualified on pole position four tenths behind Lewis Hamilton. A quick strategy call to undercut the Dutch benefited the British. Hamilton then fended off Verstappen’s Red Bull to reach the checkered flag. Toto Wolff is aware that Mercedes cannot work miracles in every race. To win the title, the reigning champions need to improve the performance of their car.
“We may have won the first round, but we have no illusions that this will be an easy season. The car still lacks speed on a single lap and Red Bull seems to be ahead at the moment. We’re working hard to fill the void and that’s a challenge we love. “
At the start of the season, Wolff said:
“The 2021 F1 season has certainly got off to a spectacular start. It was an encouraging first race that went away from Bahrain on a double podium and hopefully the duel in the desert between us and Red Bull is a sign of what is to come this year. “
Drivers enjoy racing in Imola: Toto Wolff

The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari is an iconic race track. The narrowness of the track makes it difficult for drivers to overtake. Qualifying will be a crucial session in Imola. The lack of overtaking opportunities makes it helpful to start the race from a higher position.
Toto Wolff said about the characteristics of the track:
“It’s a route that the drivers really enjoy with its lively nature, its high speeds and the variety of curve types. It’s a pretty tight track that makes overtaking difficult, but that puts the focus more on strategy and makes qualifying even more important. “
Toto Wolff seems concerned about the gap between Mercedes and Red Bull. The team from Milton Keynes will certainly keep their pace advantage at Imola.
Can Red Bull and Max Verstappen go one step further this weekend? Or will Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes perform another miracle? We’ll have answers by the end of this week.
