Where does the Turkish Grand Prix take place?
The Turkish Grand Prix will be held at Istanbul Park and returned to F1 in 2020 after nine years off the calendar. Last year, as is well known, drivers had to deal with a fresh track that led to slippery and unpredictable conditions. Ahead of this year’s Grand Prix, the track was blasted with water to improve conditions, but Friday practice will tell us all about the success of this plan after the cars all over the circuit in practice last year.
It’s not a particularly wide track, but due to a combination of high-speed turns and technically difficult turns, there are still a few places to overtake. Since the drivers were able to give full throttle through Turn 11 into the second DRS zone, we were able to see some bold overtaking maneuvers into the braking zone in Turn 12.
Tips and recommendations for the F1 Grand Prix of Turkey
Tip: fastest lap – Lewis Hamilton (+175)
Before the rain changed everything over the track at the last minute, the Russian Grand Prix was all about damage control for Red Bulls Max Verstappen, who started the race from the end of the grid due to a new engine. Verstappen and Red Bull just wanted to cap the expected point swing in favor of Lewis Hamilton, but instead the rain came and Hamilton landed on the step next to him with Verstappen as the two title contenders finished first and second.
We expect a similar situation this weekend in Istanbul, where Hamilton and Mercedes are heavily considering using a fourth engine and receiving the same starting penalty from Verstappen last time. In this case, it is important for Hamilton to make up as many places as possible and to get the fastest lap and the associated extra point towards the end of the race.
Even if Hamilton and Mercedes won’t be using the new engine this weekend, we’re excited to help him set the fastest lap on a track where he has won twice, including last season with over 30 seconds.
Tip: podium placement – Lando Norris (+275)
After the most devastating moment of his young career in Sochi, Lando Norris can recover and take the podium he lost at the Russian Grand Prix in Turkey.
With the potential for rain on Saturday and Sunday, there is a chance one or both of the sessions could be turned upside down in the chaos. However, Norris usually qualified well even in the rain as he was on pole position in Belgium before a crash ended the session and then qualified first at the Russian Grand Prix. With the fourth best average qualifying position this season, Norris will likely position himself at the top of the grid for the Grand Prix, regardless of whether we have rain or clear conditions on Saturday.
Norris did well at last year’s Turkish Grand Prix in a race where very few drivers impressed. A start penalty from qualifying brought Norris back to 14th place, then fell further back after a bad start, but then went to work and ended up eighth and set the fastest lap. Both Norris and his McLaren have improved on last year and with a better starting position from the start, he’ll make it a place on the podium.
Tip: Fastest qualifier and race win – Max Verstappen (+175)
Last year, Verstappen seemed like the man to beat at Istanbul Park as he led all three practice sessions and the first two qualifying sessions before being driven for pole by a phenomenal lap by Lance Stroll. A bad strategic decision by Red Bull resulted in both Red Bull drivers and both AlphaTauri drivers losing places at the start, but then Verstappen was a man on a mission only slowed down by a wild spin that resulted in the result an impatient attempt to overtake was in the rain. While the weekend was remembered for Hamilton’s heroic victory, it was dominated by Verstappen.
Now the Red Bull driver is looking for redemption in an improved car and in the chase for the title, just two points behind Hamilton. It’s a circuit that the Red Bull car favors over Mercedes, and Hamilton could be completely out of action if he got a new engine. Verstappen has taken six poles this season, compared to four for Hamilton, and has been the better driver throughout the season. With +175 to top on both days, compared to -138 on Sunday, we love the value here.
