Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko has warned the team’s newest driver, Pierre Gasly, to drive more carefully.
Marko is the best Red Bull official under team owner Dietrich Mateschitz, and Marko is aiming for “at least five wins” for Red Bull Racing in this Formula 1 season in the first year with a Honda engine. The team clinched four F1 victories a year ago – two each for Daniel Ricciardo and in 2019 the returning driver Max Verstappen.
“I think we also have a certain chance at the World Cup,” said Marko to the Austrian press agency.
Marko says it was the best decision Rena Bull could have made to ditch Renault and switch to Honda factory. Another decision was to replace Renault-tied Ricciardo with ex-Toro Rosso driver Gasly for 2019. However, Gasly’s inexperience was shown with two falls during tests in Barcelona.
“With the second crash we ran out of spare parts, so that Max Verstappen could hardly drive on the last day,” said Marko.
Nevertheless, Red Bull will treat Gasly and Verstappen fairly in 2019.
“Nothing will change that way, but what we saw in the tests is that Gasly is not yet at Verstappen’s level. But we didn’t expect that either,” said Marko.
When asked about Gasly’s test form, Marko added, “Other than the two crashes, it was perfect.”
